jane christie-johnston
Jane is a singer, choir director and event producer. She is the Director of the Sing For Your Life! Choir, the Ho-Ho-Hobart Christmas Choir and Up She Rises. She also sings with award-winning a cappella ensemble ThylaSing, and recently formed a new dance music collaboration with Queensland-based artist Dellandra. You can also hear her on the soundtrack for Deadloch (Prime Video, 2023). Previously Jane has sung with guitar/vocals duo Silk, and a cappella groups Heart & Soul and About Time, plus a few choirs about the place.
Jane is currently the co-producer of Jokers Comedy (including seven years of Jokers Comedy Club and 18 months of Comedy at the Casino) in Hobart. She has previously produced events including the Tasmanian RAW Comedy and Class Clowns competitions, Laugh-Aid comedy fundraisers, comedy shows for the Taste Festival, the A Cappella Lounge series and choir events, and a range of quiz nights, fundraisers, team-building activities and other events. She has been part of the production team for the Hobart Comedy Festival and has co-produced shows and managed performance venues in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She was an Associate Producer of Tasmania's Festival of Voices for three years (2013-15) and the Volunteers Coordinator for the Ten Days on the Island Festival in 2017, and is a past President of the Tasmanian A Cappella Association. She is also the current Chairperson of the Young Voices of Hobart Board.
Jane runs choir singing workshops for community and corporate groups - even for people who are adamant they 'don't sing'! In recent years Jane has been arranging songs for her choir to sing - some of these arrangements can be sampled and purchased via the Sing For Your Life! Choir website.
Recently Jane has started dabbling in photography, taking photos of comedians, actors and assorted relatives who are willing to be her crash test dummies in a makeshift home photo studio (okay, so it's the dining room, whatevs). If you're interested in volunteering to have your pics taken so she can keep improving, please drop her a line.
Jane has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Sociology, and an Advanced Diploma of Business Management. Before taking a giant leap to working fulltime in the arts industry in 2011, she worked in fields including criminology, prisons administration and government service delivery. Her first paid job was as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant where she once mistook a large spring roll for a banana fritter and served it with icecream and cream. So, you know, swings and roundabouts.
